Talking therapy is not supposed to be something which is ‘done to you’ but instead should be seen as an effective treatment that involves listening, working together and involving you to improve your sense of wellbeing and everyday functioning.

With this is mind, we hope to explain in a bit more detail about the different types of talking treatments currently used within our service, and what other choices and flexibility around venues and appointment times are available for you to consider.

Taking a ‘Stepped Care’ approach to talking therapies

All our therapists work together in a coordinated way within something called a stepped care model.

This approach to talking therapies is recommended in NICE guidelines for the treatment of anxiety, depression and other common mental health problems.

Stepped care aims to provide the ‘least intrusive’ form of therapy first and is often referred to as the ‘lowest dose’.

In practical terms this means most people will enter our service for treatment at Step 2 with a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner for up to six sessions.

In many cases this ‘lower dose’ of treatment is just right to help people manage their symptoms and begin to feel better. Where a person does not fully benefit from this treatment, they may be ‘stepped up’ to receive more intensive treatment from a High Intensity CBT Therapist or Counsellor.

Approximately 10% of people who commence treatment with us will bypass Step 2 and will enter treatment at Step 3.

Our initial telephone assessment provides you with the opportunity to give us some brief information about your current concerns so that we can make a collaborative decision with you about the best way forward with your treatment.

Other considerations…

We provide our face to face therapy in over many locations across Thurrock, and our aim is to provide the help you need in convenient locations within easy reach of where you live or work.

If one of our locations fits with your journey to, or from work, or if you can travel to a neighbouring GP practice then please discuss this with one of our practitioners at your initial telephone assessment.

We also provide evening clinics in some locations and can also provide telephone appointments for some or all of your therapy with us.
